Surrey Counselling Service

GP and Self Referral

How do I (or we) book counselling or psychotherapy sessions with SCS?

There are two ways to obtain counselling or psychotherapy with SCS:

  1. By referral from your GP; or
  2. By self referral.

SCS is currently registered with numerous GP surgeries throughout the reorganized Surrey Primary Care Trust. We currently focus on surgeries in the south, central and west of Surrey. We are, however, putting in place arrangements to ensure our Practice services are available throughout the County of Surrey.

Depending on your need your GP will advise you whether you should see a qualified counsellor or psychotherapist within SCS. We have put in place arrangements with surgery GPs that enable you to be referred for a consultation with the minimum of fuss or time. You will not need a GP referral letter and then wait weeks for an appointment. Your GP will simply give you the SCS telephone number, together with details of our service, to enable you to contact us direct. When you contact us we will give you an immediate appointment for a consultation and talk through with you any concerns you may have and do our best to answer all your questions concerning the process of therapy. The telephone conversation between you and SCS is strictly private and confidential.

If you decide to seek counselling or psychotherapy direct it is important that you see only counsellors and therapists who have recognised registered qualifications with UKCP and/or BACP and are sufficiently experienced and mature to meet your needs. At SCS all practitioners are carefully selected and are professionally qualified mainstream counsellors and psychotherapists experienced in a range of psychogenic and counselling modalities and types of treatment. If you would prefer to make an appointment direct simply telephone our Appointments and Information Secretary to arrange a consultation.

We endeavour to ensure all clients are given an appointment for a consultation within 7 days of making contact and are placed with a counsellor or psychotherapist within 14 days. Our service is ‘open–ended’ which means there is no limit or restrictions to the overall period of therapy. Once therapy begins it is crucial that a firm commitment is made and we generally recommend that clients engage in a period of at least 10 weekly sessions.
